Fake Jewelry in the Hip Hop Industry

Fake Jewelry in the Hip Hop Industry

The everyday person does not own any extensive pieces of jewelry. It is looked at as a luxury that only a few can afford. Those that have it, love to show it off. Those that don’t have it, watch in awe.

Expensive pieces of jewelry is not something new to the Hip Hop industry. Rappers love to spend their hard-earned money on something flashy- perhaps a gold chain. Maybe a diamond encrusted Rolex Watch. Or even a fully buss down Jesus Piece. These jewelry pieces signify a great level of success, as none of them come with a cheap price tag.

As the years have gone by, there has been a new fad. Jewelry that looks exactly like the real thing.

Except it’s not.

Gold Plated pieces and Cubic Zirconia diamonds have boomed in the recent years, making the “look” more affordable. While there is nothing wrong with rocking pieces made of these look-alike cheaper materials, successful rappers with fake jewelry have been “exposed” and clowned upon.

A select number of rappers have been accused of rocking fake jewelry just for a flex.

Migos

Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane, made an Instagram post and openly claimed that the first day that he had met the Atlanta rap group “Migos” they had on fake chains. Out of his generosity, he took two of his own chains and put it on them. From then, the Migos have never rocked fake jewelry again.

Tekashi 6ix9ine

One of the most controversial figures in the hip hop industry, Tekashi 6ix9ine had allegations of him wearing fake jewelry while claiming that they are real. In order to prove himself, he took the “Diamond Tester Challenge” along with rapper friend Ugly God who had received similar accusations.

As it turns out, the device gave off a positive response to Ugly God’s jewelry and designer JimmyBoi’s but did not give a response to Tekashi’s.

Let’s just say; egos were hurt in the process.
